Alaska-based Rasmuson Foundation will announce this year’s Individual Artist Awards grantees live from Second Life on Tuesday, June 5th. All artists featured are based in Alaska including rural parts of the state.

2012 marks the sixth year that the multiverse arts event has taken place in both the virtual world Second Life at the Rasmuson Foundation Gallery of Alaskan Artists on the island of Rhetorica and in downtown Anchorage with the Second Life event projected on a big screen.

Popular Second Life musician JueL Resistance once again performs at the start of the event followed by the unveiling new art representing the works of the 2012 Fellows and Distinguished Artist, individuals who are receiving grants this year from Rasmuson Foundation to recognize – and advance their art careers.

The art will be displayed along the new gallery wing, a river with virtual canoes that can be ridden upstream to view the art. The installation of the Distinguished Artist’s work will take up the entire top floor of the gallery. Last year’s top floor featured the work of artist Ray Troll. His work will remain on view on another floor of the gallery.

The gallery and hybrid events are produced by Rasmuson Foundation in partnership with Alaska-based digital strategy company Mediaegg, LLC and the University of Alaska Fairbanks.

Last year’s gala was filmed and resulting footage will be used in a 5-year retrospective of the Foundation’s exploration of virtual worlds for promoting Alaska art to a global audience. The film will be produced by Pooky Media, a Second Life multimedia company, and debuts in June.

WHEN: 1:30am-12:30pm SLT (10:30am-11:30am Alaska Time)
