Just moments after she finished the build for the Black & Blue Fair event, organizer Keira Seerose met with me for a sneak preview and caught me up to speed: “The Black & Blue Fair is a fashion event primarily, but I used it to bring attention to something I feel is important in the SL community — mental health issues. I have no statistical proof, but I feel from my years on SL that a lot of people on here are unhappy in RL, and that can be due to circumstances or medical reasons.”
Keira personally suffers from depression, acute social anxiety disorder and mood dysthymia, which affect both her RL and SL and how she interacts with people. She explains, “It is important to have a broad knowledge of these issues when making friends with people in any community…”
The venue itself is filled with messages, reminding me of the retail store The Body Shop, founded in 1976 by activist Anita Roddick. Shoppers went to buy peach-scented soap and strawberry body lotion, but walked away with lessons on how to be a better global citizen. Roddick used her multi-national company as a platform to raise awareness (and money) for various causes around the world — from fair trade and HIV prevention to issues of self esteem and universal human rights.
Like The Body Shop, powerful messages can be found all around the Black & Blue Fair venue. Twelve facts such as,
“More people die by suicide in a year than the amount of people killed in homicides, wars and terrorist attacks combined.”
and hotline numbers adorn the walls, and 17 well-researched notecards on various topics pertaining to mental illness are subtly placed around the fabulously-designed shopping area.
Keira continues, ”I just keep thinking – if one person comes here to see League’s dress or Magika’s hair… and they learn something… that could save someone’s life…”
Over 100 generous designers contributed an exclusive item for the fair. The fair starts June 3rd, midnight GMT (4pm SLT) and runs through July 4th.
